No one ever believes that I get hate mail, but this one is pretty standard.
How would YOU respond?
My typical MO is not to respond at all. I mean, why even get into it?
But this one inspired me to set the record straight on some things.
Thanks for this opportunity, Jacqueline. ;-)
So as I see it, this person is basically calling me a prostitute… I get my husband off, take his money and then go “elsewhere” to satisfy my needs…
Yeah… Not exactly a great rapport building technique if she’s actually interested in a response.
Since when does loving someone with a disability automatically make you a gold-digger or a sex worker?
Years ago, I might have responded from ego with something like, “Hang on… You insult me by insinuating that I need/want money from my husband and then you expect me to open up to you about my sex life?” WTF?
Today, my first thoughts are more along these lines… “Wow… who hurt you so badly?”
Because here’s what I know…
The amount of pain that someone has to be in to write something like this must be fierce and overwhelming, forcing their ego to stand in strict defense of their barricaded heart.
THIS is exactly why I love what I do…. Waking people up to the power in the center of their chests. Often, they’re just scared of what their hearts would have them know.
I find that those who are the hardest to love are those who need it most. It’s easy to write them off and be angry in return (and they *do* make it easy), but I know that they’re just stuck in their heads, swimming in the lies their egos would have them believe.
Another generalization here is that a person with a disability is asexual or unable to sexually please his or her partner.
So let me set the record straight once and for all… My husband and I have an awesome and fun sex life (although you won’t get me—privacy advocate that I am—to go into more detail than that).
Jaded and cynical? Yep, I believe so.
P.S. Dear Jacqueline, When you write to a public figure, you open yourself up to this stuff. ;-)
P.P.S. I hope love finds you, sneaks past the guards of your heart and unlocks the best part of life for you.
