Issue 14: Heart to Heart with Renee Airya

Renee Airya

Imagine being told you had two weeks left to live.
Now imagine that you’re 23 years old when you hear that.
“Pancreatic cancer…”

What would you do?

Let me introduce you to my friend, Renee Airya.  Renee faced not one, but three life threatening illnesses in her 30-some years on the planet.  In this Heart to Heart interview, she spoke with me about her journey thus far.  She describes her life path in three segments:  her desire for external validation; her process of self-healing; and her focus on service and contribution.

You’ll hear about…

  • the anger that comes with a difficult life journey
  • the healing miracles she experienced
  • how she confronted what she has lost and focuses on what she is creating NOW

Please leave us a comment below and let us hear your thoughts!

For more information on Renee’s work, visit her website at AwakenYourSource.com.

The book I mentioned in the interview is called The Soul of Money by Lynne Twist.  The organization we talked about is Pachamama Alliance.  Visit their website, get to know their story and support their work if you feel so called.

Renee’s Bio:

Heart to Heart with Tiamo

Tiamo with guitar

This month’s Heart to Heart features singer and songwriter, Tiamo, who was named L.A. Music Award’s “Male Singer/Songwriter of the Year” and San Diego Music Award’s “Best Songwriter.”  His music has been described as a cross between Jason Mraz and John Mayer.  Tiamo has been featured on FOX, CBS, NBC, and MSNBC and has performed on stage at the Jimmy Kimmel Show.

We chatted about his own experience in love and what inspires him to write his songs.  “When your heart is broken,” he said, “it’s always about what your next elevated choice is going to be.”

Tiamo narrowed his list of what he was looking for in a partner to THREE THINGS.  You’ll learn exactly what he was looking for… and what he found!  You’ll also hear the stories behind the lyrics of two of his songs, Be the Change (featured in the Hug It Forward video below) and Butterfly.

This interview is now available in the Archives.

Beautiful Storm

Here’s a quick video I shot from the airplane window on a recent trip home from Los Angeles.  What a treat to witness this beauty from above.

We are all here to grow and expand, and our personal relationships are often the greatest catalyst to help us do that. They also can be the most stormy aspects in our lives!

There is beauty in the storm, though.  Just as I was able to see this from another angle–above the clouds–next time you find yourself in a relational storm, see if you can step back and see it from a different perspective.  Seek out the beauty as you pass through, and then beyond, the storm.

Dare to love,

Mindie

Kniss on Mindfulness

A talk I presented in Costa Rica last December on Mindfulness…  plus a simple tool to re-center in the NOW.

Many thanks to the folks at MindValley and FinerMinds for the recording.

Who are you trying to please?

I noticed that I hadn’t posted any Kniss Connection videos on my YouTube channel since August — and admittedly, I’ve been busy.  Here are a few of the things I’ve been up to:

  • Moving from Portland, OR to Chicago
  • Developing a beautiful, connected relationship with my SoulMatch
  • Traveling to Salt Lake City, Maine, Dallas, Orlando, Mexico and Costa Rica
  • Creating a brand new program for my coaching clients

So… New year, new video.  Enjoy!

Heart to Heart with Mark Black

Each month, Restart Your Heart members receive a “heart to heart” interview with the leading experts on love and inspired living.  As an introduction to the program, this month’s interview is available to everyone… Enjoy!

Mark Black

Mark Black

I had the opportunity to chat with Mark Black, a speaker and the author of Live Life from the Heart.  I met Mark at a speaking event in Orlando last month, and when I heard his message, I knew he’d be a great fit.  While Restart Your Heart is about the figurative heart, the center of love and compassion in our lives, Mark’s experience was literal.  He endured two open-heart surgeries before the age of two, went on to receive a heart and double-lung transplant in 2002… and now completes marathons!

“I used the experience of coming close to death to teach me how to live,” he says.

I was delighted to find so many concepts that transcended the physical and could be just as applicable to the metaphorical heart.  While Mark was describing the steps he took to help restart his heart, I thought about how closely they resembled what I would tell my clients.

“If you’ve never had a broken heart, you haven’t lived… because you haven’t loved.”

You’ll learn the power of perspective and perseverance, plus Mark’s four keys for Living Life from the Heart.  His story is truly inspiring.

In the interview, Mark mentioned Dick and Rick Hoyt as some of his heroes.  Here’s a video of them from IronMan Triathlon (I was bawling when I watched this).  Their story will inspire you, as it did for Mark.

Awesomeness Fest

Awesomeness Fest lived up to its name.  So many incredible people… Such a gorgeous location!

Here are a couple personal highlights:

David Morelli spoke on tapping into intuition, how today we are so connected through the internet, but how we are learning more and more to connect to our “inner-net.”  Brilliant.

Lisa Nichols was an inspiration — it’s easy to tune out words of motivation when I am constantly surrounded by them in my work.  For whatever reason, the space I was in and her words combined to stir up something within me that is still working its way into expression.  Powerful stuff…

Laura Silva, the daughter of Silva Method creator, José Silva, described her experience of putting into practice all of the personal growth tools to which she had access.  It’s an important question to ask ourselves how often we utilize the tools and techniqes we have at our disposal to continue to step beyond our comfort zones and into our potential.  Laura’s joy radiated from the stage and it was such a delight to connect with her.

I spoke on mindfulness and shared a quick exercise to recenter and disconnect from autopilot at any point in the day.  I based my talk on Ellen Langer’s research on mindfulness and the recent book, Buddha’s Brain: The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love & Wisdom.  Having someone like Chip Conley jump out of his seat to give me a standing ovation was such an honor. (Love you Chip!)

Vishen Lakhiani, creator of Awesomeness Fest through his company, MindValley, focused the whole event around the balance between being happy in the present moment and having a clear vision of success in the future — a state he would describe as being in flow.

At the end of the conference, Sean and I flew out of Costa Rica from a different airport than that in which we had arrived.  At first, it seemed like a huge inconvenience: having to take a tiny turbo-prop from a local airstrip to the international airport.  We quickly realized that it was actually one of the highlights of the trip — an opportunity to see more of the stunning countryside.  Here’s a quick taste…

Overall, Awesomeness Fest was truly an AWESOME experience.  I am so grateful to each and every one of you who added to the energy with your presence.
